What is new?

Greetings of the season!

A short note to update you on recent developments in Gynaecological Laparoscopic surgery.

Single Incision Laparoscopy” has come of age and I am pleased to be offering this new innovative surgical technique for the benefit of your patients. I have successfully carried this out in some patients and the outcomes are pleasing!

Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery” [SILS] is a new technique that has now been utilized in many centres for minimal access surgery. This is an advanced minimal access surgical procedure in which the surgeon operates almost exclusively through a single entry point, typically the patient’s navel.

The advantages of “Single Incision Laparoscopy” are

Better Cosmesis

Ease of tissue retrieval

Patient acceptance and quicker recovery

Why is “Single Incision Laparoscopy” not easy to carry out?

Need good laparoscopic skills and has a significant learning curve

Reduced triangulation and ergonomics for the surgeon

The SILS™ procedure represents one of the newest advancements in surgery, making its way onto the scene in the late 1990s and rising to the forefront in recent years as enhanced technology has facilitated the evolution of the single incision approach.

So how is this new technique different from traditional surgery as we know it, or even the surgical advancements of the last few decades?

The SILS™ approach is designed to make surgery less invasive. Thus, instead of a six-inch incision required by traditional surgery or the three to four smaller half-inch incisions utilized in standard laparoscopic surgery, the SILS™ surgery is accomplished through a single incision in the belly button. Cutting edge technology, including the SILS™ Port, allows surgeons to operate through a 2 cm incision.

One incision improves upon standard laparoscopic techniques, potentially eliminating the scars associated with multiple points of entry.

Single Incision Laparoscopy” is another step forward in improving the best surgical care with a single hidden scar and I am excited to be offering this in Auckland!

As you know, due to my subspecialty interest and experience, I am able to offer Laparoscopic approaches to Hysterectomy, Endometriosis, Ovarian cysts, fibroids, Sacrocolpopexy and oophorectomy. In addition, I continue to offer endometrial ablation, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, incontinence management and prolapse repair.
